Chronic Symptoms
Insomnia (Fumin)
A general term for sleep problems, such as difficulty falling asleep, waking up during the night, or waking up too early in the morning. Often caused by mental/physical fatigue or excessive stress.
Kampo Interpretation of Insomnia
While Western sleeping pills induce sleep by suppressing brain activity, Kampo aims to restore natural sleep by balancing the constitution and resolving the mental disturbances that cause insomnia.
Conditions where “Qi” is overly excited and cannot settle down, or where “Blood” is deficient and fails to nourish the spirit, are thought to lead to insomnia.
Main Kampo Approaches
- Sansohninto: Suitable for those who cannot sleep due to physical and mental exhaustion and often have dreams.
- Kamikihito: Used for individuals with a weak gastrointestinal tract who cannot sleep due to strong feelings of anxiety or fretfulness.
- Saikokaryukotsuboreito: Effective for those dealing with intense stress, who are too irritable to sleep, or who suffer from palpitations.
